With so much talk about CBD and its benefits among people, many have started to take it for their own reasons. Some may find that taking CBD helps them to fall asleep easier, while others use it to ease nervousness or anxiousness. There are also people living an active lifestyle who use CBD to help with muscle and joint soreness and fatigue after physical training. But how long does it take CBD to work?
With all the useful applications and positive reports on CBD oil, you might have tried it before; only to find out it does nothing for you. We can’t think of a more discouraging thing to go through. Here you are, battling a barrier in your life, you find so many testimonials about CBD so you try it, only to be let down.
There are many reasons why the particular CBD you’ve tried didn’t work. Maybe a quality issue, or could be the potency of CBD when compared to your Body Mass Index (BMI). But, one reason that we find is all too common is simply this; you may not have given the CBD you’ve been taking enough time to get into your body systems.
You’ve probably heard a salesperson at the store say this to you but, what exactly does that mean? More importantly – How long does it take for CBD oil to work?
It is important to know that CBD is not a one-size-fits-all solution to every ailment. There is no predetermined time for CBD to start working for everybody either. The reasons behind that are due to numerous factors, such as the type of CBD you are using, dosage and frequency of use, all play an important part in how CBD will affect your body.
To figure out how long it takes CBD to work and how long CBD oil lasts in the body, it is important to know how CBD interacts with our bodies, to begin with.
How Exactly Does CBD Work With the Body?
CBD is an organic cannabinoid that works with our endocannabinoid system or ECS. Our ECS system contains two components which are receptors CB1 and CB2. CBD itself is a non-intoxicating compound that produces no “high” feeling. CBD typically bonds with the CB2 connectors of the ECS.
The CB2 receptors are attached to our peripheral nervous system. This system is an extensive network of nerve fibres that connect to several organs, including the skin, muscles and other limbs. The receptors send signals to various body parts after coming in contact with CBD.
To interact with the ECS, CBD must get into the bloodstream bypassing through our blood-brain barrier – a protective, biological material between the blood vessels in our brain and the cells and other elements comprising our brain tissue, according to the Queensland Brain Institute.
Travelling through the body and crossing into the blood-brain barrier affects how long it takes for CBD oil to work with you. This process also depends on how you use CBD oil.
How Should I Use CBD Oil
CBD oil comes in many different forms but the most effective way to take CBD is from oil tinctures. CBD oil is taken under the tongue and is called sublingual application.
The Best Way to Take CBD? Sublingually of Course!
With CBD oil tinctures, you can place a few drops of CBD oil underneath your tongue, hold it for 30-to-60 seconds, and then swallow. This method allows CBD to become absorbed through the membranes and capillaries under the tongue and directly into the bloodstream.
Taking CBD oil sublingually is the quickest and most straightforward means of getting CBD into your system. Usually, it takes up to 30 minutes for the CBD oil to work. And the effects should last for a few hours. For more details on this, go to our Usage and Dosage Page
If you do swallow CBD as opposed to letting it dissolve, it will be going through the digestive system and could take up to 90 minutes. But this estimate could vary depending on whether you’re taking CBD alongside a large meal or on an empty stomach.
A Topical Route to Taking CBD
It is also possible to take CBD with CBD infused creams, lotions and gels. Earlier, we mentioned that CBD typically needs to get inside the bloodstream to be effective. However, that is not the case with topical CBD products.
CBD topicals work in contact with the CB2 receptors located within the skin. This means that it is possible to feel the effects soon after use. And no matter how much you massage into your skin, the CBD never enters into the bloodstream. This makes it possible to treat local pain in muscles and joints via a topical CBD product. What Factors Can Affect How Long It Takes for CBD to Work?
Because of how different each person’s body is, there are many factors that can affect how long it takes CBD to work. Some of these factors include:
- Metabolism
- Body Weight
- User Frequency
- Dosage
Let’s take a closer look.
Metabolism: The metabolism works to break down and combine compounds within the body. Processing and metabolizing CBD can become affected by a person’s metabolic rate. It also plays a role in how long CBD remains in the body. A person’s metabolism gradually changes as their body continues to develop and mature. We’ve written an article about interactions between CBD and medications and how the metabolism works with CBD. Click here to read it.
A Person’s BMI: Body Mass Index will affect how long it takes for compounds to circulate throughout the body. It can also alter how much CBD oil you need for it to be effective. If you have a larger body mass index, you will need to take multiple servings or higher amounts of CBD in addition to allowing more time for it to get through your body. Someone smaller may not need as much or need very much time.
Frequency of Use: The serving suggestion isn’t enough based on a person’s body type. Also, how often you use CBD-based products will affect how long it takes CBD oil to work with your system; It could be that a serving in the morning and at night isn’t enough for you. A great thing about CBD oil is that you can easily adjust how often you take it. Consistency is king though, and you should continue regular usage for 30 days to feel how well CBD interacts with your body.
Serving Size: There is not a universal amount of CBD that can work with everyone. And like the frequency of use above, you may need to take more or less CBD per serving dependent on your body type. Do rest assured though, there is no record of anyone ever overdosing on CBD oil, so you can be generous with how much you take.
To give a more concrete answer though, after all, you are reading this blog post for answers ?. Experts recommend starting with a small amount of CBD oil and gradually increasing it per serving until you feel your desired effects. We call this the slow and low method. Once you find the right dosage, continue it for 30 days for the best results.
How Long Do the Effects from CBD Oil Last?
There are several factors that determine how long CBD will last in your system. Of course, these can vary with each person. So, there’s no predetermined amount of time that CBD will typically stay in your body. But, there is research that can give us an idea.
Studies found that CBD is detectable in the body for up to three days after using it. Another researched case discovered CBD lasting in the bloodstream for only six hours after being ingested – how you take CBD oil could also affect how long it lasts. This lends to the consistency model. The more consistent you are with your dosages, making sure to take it every day, the more likely CBD will be present in your body for longer. This in turn will mean more CBD is in your body, available for use when your body needs it.
What are the Types of CBD? How Long Does Each One Take to Work?
There are three general types of CBD oil legally available.
CBD isolate
This pure version of CBD oil contains no other types of cannabinoids, flavours, or terpenes. It uses only CBD isolates extracted from industrial hemp and infused into a carrier oil for safe absorption. CBD isolate initially seemed like the gold standard. That is until people reported less attractive results. CBD Isolate is in a sense, too pure. There are no other terpenes or cannabinoids that interact with the CBD. This is why we choose not to offer a CBD isolate product.
Broad-spectrum
This type of CBD oil typically has no detectable amount of THC. It does include CBD isolates infused in a carrier oil, but it also incorporates other beneficial cannabinoids like CBG and CBN, terpenes, and flavourings. Broad Spectrum CBD offers athletes and other professionals a route when they want to start using CBD. Recently, CBD was cleared as an acceptable substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency. This was done because CBD does offer performance-enhancing changes to a user. What it could do, and many top athletes swear by it, is help manage poor sleep before competitions, manage pain and injury and speed up recovery times. Our Broad Spectrum CBD oil UK is 100% THC Free and 3rd party lab-tested to prove it!
Full-spectrum
This type of CBD oil contains everything that you’ll find in a broad spectrum CBD oil; but, it will also have a small and legal amount of THC. Our Full Spectrum CBD products carry the maximum legal limit of THC. Within Europe and the UK, that limit is 0,2%.
Remember that high-quality CBD oil needs to have a certificate of analysis from a 3rd party laboratory. All of our products have a batch number that you can use to look up any product’s exact content. In our lab reports, we’ve pulled out all of the stops; each report contains the EXACT amount of CBD, THC, CBG, CBN and Terpenes. This way you know exactly what you are putting into your body is a pure and quality product.
