‘There is hardly anything in the world that someone cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and those who consider price alone are this person’s lawful prey.’
The explosion of interest in CBD oil is both good and not-so-good news. Good, because the good stuff is absolutely brilliant; not so good because rocketing demand has seen unscrupulous entrants cutting corners, making the quotation above* more pertinent than ever.
The hemp plant is unusually responsive to its environment.
It’s known as a ‘hyper-accumulator’ – which makes it one of the most efficient plants on the planet at attracting influences from the soil around it. As an example of how good it is, after the Chernobyl disaster it was used by farmers to suck the toxic compounds from the contaminated earth. It can’t stop itself: it’s here to help!
What that means is that if there’s anything impure in the vicinity, it will find it – and take it on board. This is the single biggest reason to insist on organic cultivation. The extraordinary power of medicinal cannabis is intimately related to its delicacy – so the purer the soil, the more careful the cultivation, the better able it is to have the desired effect.
This all makes the cannabis plant much like a human child. It needs the best start, a favourable environment and hands-on care. The more love they’re given, the better they grow up. Sadly, producers who appreciate this – and act accordingly – are vanishingly rare.
The majority of CBD companies are now buying their oils from large wholesalers offering low-cost CBD oil extracted from hemp grown all around Europe and the USA. This is called ‘Bio Mass’ – large quantities of remaining plant material after the flowers and seeds have been removed. The end user has no idea where the cannabis plants were grown, in what soil and what cultivation methods were used.
The benefit to these companies is an endless supply at low prices. The benefit to the customer is not so great, resulting in lower quality oils that are not certified organic, with no guarantee of a responsible ‘seed-to-bottle’ process.
Your introduction to CBD should be the start of a fruitful long-term relationship. Do your research – and beware of blind dates!
* FOOTNOTE: it’s usually ascribed to Victorian sage John Ruskin, but no-one can find a reliable, trustworthy source. As we’re all about reliable, trustworthy sources, we’ll leave it un-attributed. Whoever first said it, it’s still one of the truest things we’ve read.
We feel blessed to be partnered with a Swiss company that gives us full quality control over the entire production from seed to bottle. Our Swiss partners have 15 years’ experience in cannabis cultivation and are the largest members of Bio Suisse, the main organisation for organic agriculture in Switzerland.
Finally, thanks to our innovative, gentle CO2 extraction process, our CBD oils are guaranteed to preserve all the phenomenal active ingredients of the cannabis plant. Each SWISS-GRADE leaf is harvested by hand. No chemicals, pesticides or additives are used during the planting, cultivation and production. You can taste the potency in every drop – which is why we never add false flavourings to mask the pure organic taste.
