How to Gain Strength with CBD Muscle Balm
We don’t need to start this article about getting ripped by concocting any wild claims on why natural alternatives for muscle growth are superior. Instead, we are going to show you how to gain more strength with CBD muscle balm.
Why?
Because the NHS lists the side-effects of anabolic steroids (for men) for free:
- Shrunken testicles
- Reduced sperm count
- Erectile dysfunction
- Baldness
- Breast development
- Severe acne
- Stomach pain
- Increased risk of prostate cancer
That’s the whole list, guys.
Wait. So the massive guns Doug got down at Lads Lads Lads Fitness that swing about like bazookas are destroying his actual bazooka, or should I say potato gun?
Yes.
You can read it on the NHS website for yourself.
Poor Doug.
We agree. Anabolic steroids are also highly addictive, so go easy on him.
Of course, we hope that you’re reading this article because you exercise or hit the gym for health, wellbeing and all those other nice little positives – and not to become a T-shirt-exploding grenade.
If that’s you, then we have some fantastic news about how CBD muscle balm (aka CBD muscle rub) can help your muscle pain, muscle recovery and even help you get ripped naturally (if you really must).
The body’s natural way to promote muscle growth
In one of few scientific studies on why people stop exercising, researchers at the Shahid Behesti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran scoured 34 papers to find the number one cause.
What was it? It may surprise you: physical complaints were the most consistently cited barriers.
That means that problems of ‘physical weakness’ and ‘lack of energy’ trump your excuses of not having enough time.
It’s okay to admit that.
Though the paper looked at older populations, the pain-staking literature review found the greatest motivators were anything that improved one’s physical condition: reduced muscle pain, better sleep, greater mobility and the strengthening of your muscles.
The takeaway is it’s not necessarily how long you stay pumping iron for, but your success in boosting how you actually feel both during and after exercise.
More time or a better gym is a second-place motivator – alone, that new membership won’t get you jumping out of bed for 100 more repetitions.
Okay, interesting, but what’s that got to do with CBD muscle balm?
Well, a 2021 study published in the high-impact Nature scientific journal made groundbreaking discoveries into the endocannabinoid system’s role in promoting muscle growth.
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is neither a Rastafarian form of government nor an approach to motorcycle stunts for stoners.
It refers to a network of receptors that regulates mood, immunity and inflammation responses to injury and muscle trauma in both the Central Nervous System (spine and brain) and the Peripheral Nervous System (everywhere else).
Science only recently found these receptors in muscles too (hey, CBD was only removed from the US’ Controlled Substances Act in 2018. Find out more about CBD legality in the UK here.)
The Nature study identified how exercise kicks these cannabinoid receptors into action as they bring the good stuff promoting muscle growth and muscle repair.
The scientists at the Department of Movement Sciences at KU Leuven in Belgium – one of the world’s top 50 universities – actually used the words ‘orchestrate muscle growth’.
But we don’t feel ‘orchestrate’ really captures the burning pain experienced in pursuit of actual muscle growth.
In an operating theatre, rather than opera theatre, perhaps?
But how does CBD muscle balm work?
Let’s say you’re prime minister, and you need to reduce wealth inequality in your otherwise happy little society.
You wouldn’t go and give everyone a million pounds including to the already rich – you might think of giving more millions to the most disadvantaged first.
You would help the needy, right?
Okay, good.
It’s the same with CBD muscle balms (aka CBD muscle rubs).
According to the folks at The Checkup, 67% of people taking CBD get it right into their bloodstreams (that means taking a CBD oil, an edible like a gummy, a drink, a patch or vape).
In the bloodstream, the over 120 cannabinoids in most CBD oils and extracts get to work relieving pain, soothing anxiety and calming inflammation wherever they’re needed – which could be everywhere.
CBD muscle balms, however, don’t get in the blood. Instead, they get to work on the muscle or muscles wherever you’ve applied the CBD balm or CBD rub.
A 2018 report in the British Journal of Pharmacology found how compounds in CBD oil reduce inflammation and enhance muscular function.
Though the study looked at the therapeutic benefits for particular muscular-related diseases, the results mean CBD ticks the boxes for everything you might want when reducing post-workout muscle soreness, promoting muscle growth and promoting muscle growth.
Furthermore, CBD is natural, and regulates processes already ongoing in the body’s natural means of promoting muscle growth.
Because using a CBD muscle balm (or CBD muscle rub, or CBD muscle gel) means you’ll only be focusing on the areas that really need muscle recovery or repair, this maximises CBD’s benefits where you need them most.

No pain no gain – A quick reminder of how your muscles growÂ
Many CBD muscle balms or other CBD rubs and gels talk about reducing ‘muscle pain’ or ‘muscle soreness’.
The trouble is you can’t have muscle growth without muscle soreness. This is important in order to stay motivated in both your training regimes and usage of alternative paths to muscle growth and repair.
In short, the adage is true: no pain no gain.
In full, muscle fibres look a lot like those twisted steel cables (which are made up of hundreds of littler twisted steel cables). You often see holding up suspension bridges over dramatic canyons and chasms.
The smallest of the muscle fibres are called myofibrils. Myofibril fibres use glucose (sugars) to give a strong contraction force during exercise.
When you’ve broken a good number of these myofibrils, your muscles start feeling sore and fatigued. You can’t go on, you’re feeling the burn.
Yet deep inside your guns and glutes, the hurting myosin cells inside these myofibrils are crying out for help.
Enter the satellite cell.
These cells are also called ‘stem cells’, but satellite seems more dramatic, taking your little bedroom press-up all intergalactic.
These cells arrive at the scene and begin fusing with the wounded myosin. They end up creating a much stronger myofibril structure than ever before seen.
In this study on damage to trees from Hurricane Hugo in Puerto Rico, researchers found that ‘refoliation was rapid’. This was due to ‘widespread sprouting’ of new branches exactly where trees suffered splitting – our muscles are kind of like that.
(This British Journal of Pharmacology study said that CBD can ‘restore functional autophagy’.
Didn’t you say there are no side effects – tell us about that?
You might still be wondering, what’s the catch?Â
Does CBD balm have side effects?
I thought you wrote this in a sub-heading earlier?
Alright then eagle eye, let’s get to it.
CBD muscle balms only affect the muscles – they don’t get into the blood.
It also means that CBD muscle balms won’t interact with any other medications you’re taking. If you are considering taking CBD internally, read this article on interactions first.
According to the AAD, contact dermatitis can be a side-effect of skin creams and gels containing CBD oils.
(Contact dermatitis is a type of eczema that will look like a red rash on your skin. It may cause some blistering, and makes the affected area dry and irritated. The NHS says it clears up completely if the substance causing the problem is identified and avoided.
According to Dr Jeanette Jacknin, a board-certified dermatologist with the AAD, contact dermatitis from a CBD muscle balm is likely a reaction ‘to another ingredient in the product, rather than the cannabis itself’.
Dr Jacknin recommends applying a topical cannabis to a small area of skin before using it. And, before you even get there, she recommends you research all the ingredients first before use.
She also says you should check the CBD muscle balm or CBD muscle rub comes from a reputable source, and if you’ve read this far you’re probably the kind of person who really wants to take care of their body and their health.
So you’ve got that one, but thanks anyway doc.

Don’t worry, you’re not asking too much.
If you ask us, anabolic steroids and the like should be so-called ‘alternatives’.
