WANT TO QUIT SMOKING?
CBD Helps
“Smoking seriously harms you and people around you”
How many times have we seen or heard advertisements on television and radio on this topic? The truth is that we hear it daily, but it is no secret to anyone that these preventive alternatives do not get the desired effect.
Tobacco addiction has been in our country for years, and despite having all the means to encourage people to stop smoking, this vice seems to resist.
A study by the AECC (Spanish Association Against Cancer) in 2018 showed that 22% of the population in Spain affirm that they smoke daily, 2% are occasional smokers, and 25% declare themselves ex-smokers. On the other hand, more than half declare themselves non-smokers, this being more frequent in women from 75 years of age.
Regarding gender, recent figures from the Ministry of Health indicated that a quarter of men are regular smokers, compared to almost 18% of women.
Addiction – Nicotine or habit?
The RAE (Royal Spanish Academy) defines addiction as a “Dependence on substances or activities harmful to health or mental balance”. Whenever we talk about addiction we tend to think of addiction to narcotic substances such as drugs, heroin, tobacco, etc.
In the case of the tobacco, the reason for dependence always blames the addiction caused by nicotine. However, several studies have questioned whether the real reason is an addiction, in this case to nicotine, or the creation of a habit that has been increasingly founded over the years.
Human beings are animals of habit, and this limits us to repeat over and over a series of activities that we reproduce, often unconsciously, on a daily basis.
Let’s take an example, most smokers usually smoke the first cigarette with or after their first coffee in the morning. Repeating this act on a daily basis gets to a point where the brain associates the act of drinking the first coffee in the morning with smoking a cigarette, making it a habit, so every time a smoker sees a cup of coffee, his brain reacts with a desire to smoke.
How to change a habit?
21 days. The human being takes 21 days to create a new habit. If the habit is to smoke, the new habit would be to quit smoking, right? Well, it is not that simple when it comes to an addiction, since the side effects of the process include anxiety, bad mood, irritability, etc …
Human beings establish the daily behaviors through habits and the more established a habit is, the more difficult it is to change it.
Does CBD help?
CBD (cannabidiol) has been shown in numerous studies to reduce levels of stress and anxiety. Considering that these symptoms are often intertwined with addiction treatment,it is natural to think that CBD can be a great ally for smokers who want to quit smoking thanks to the perceived calming effects of the cannabinoid.
CBD to quit smoking
A 2013 study compared the efficacy of CBD with a placebo in treating tobacco addiction. Twenty-four smokers, consuming more than 10 cigarettes a day, were recruited and given an inhaler to use whenever they felt the urge to smoke. For 12 of the participants the inhaler contained CBD and for the other 12 of them a placebo. During the week that the treatment lasted, the tobacco craving and anxiety scores were assessed each day. After this week of treatment, the CBD group reduced their cigarette consumption by 40%, a difference that was significant compared to the placebo group.
One possible explanation for their results was CBD’s role in interacting with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain, as well as its calming properties that help reduce stress and anxiety.
