Is CBD Legal in the UK and EU?
Yes! CBD is legal in the UK and in most cases in the EU. Continue reading to find out more about CBD UK laws and CBD EU laws.
What is CBD?
CBD, or Cannabidiol, is part of the cannabis family and is derived from plants. It doesn’t get you ‘high’ in the way that cannabis typically does because it contains no THC, which is the psychoactive substance in cannabis. Studies have shown that CBD has lots of beneficial effects for humans and animals. However, some people may feel uncertain about whether CBD is legal because of its association with cannabis.
What are the laws about CBD in the EU?
Every country in the EU has slightly different CBD laws but it is generally legal. We recommend checking the laws in your country. It is legal in France, Germany, Spain and many other EU countries. Most countries have a limit on the amount of THC a CBD product can contain, usually 0.2%. Additionally, the European Court of Justice ruled in November 2020 that CBD is not classed as a narcotic.Â
What are the CBD UK Laws?
CBD in the UK is classed as a novel food product because it is a new food product introduced into the EU since 1999. At the moment it is illegal to grow CBD in the UK but it is legal to sell CBD which has been grown in other countries in accordance with local laws. This means that CBD brands generally import their products from Portugal, France, Switzerland or certain US states. Here at Pure Organic CBD, our products are grown in the Swiss Alps.Â
CBD products sold in the UK must contain less than 0.2% THC. On the 31st March 2021 there are some legal CBD changes taking place. By this date, companies must have an approved application for a license to sell CBD.
How do you know if a CBD product is legal?
When you are buying CBD from a new company you may be worried about the product that you are buying. That’s definitely a justified worry as recent research into CBD products has shown that some countries are falsifying the contents of their products. The Centre for Medical Cannabis (CMC) tested thirty CBD oils from UK companies and found that 40% of the products they tested contained more than 0.04% of THC making them illegal in the UK. The way to prevent yourself from buying an illegal product is by purchasing products from companies that offer third-party lab reports.Â
