How to Use CBD
There you are, ready to try CBD for the first time. You’ve probably heard the benefits from a friend or on Google. But when you buy CBD oil, the amount of choice you have can be overwhelming.
You can buy CBD in every conceivable form, from sweets to oil and creams. The type you want to use depends on what you’re using it for and the results you want to get from CBD. [Quick guide to use]
In this article, we are going to give you the low down on all of the popular methods of using CBD. By the end, you will be able to determine how to use CBD for your needs.
Be sure to read to the end because each method has their own pros and cons!
CBD Oil
Effectiveness rating: 5/5
At Pure Organic CBD, we decided to focus on oil. Examining the research we found that by taking CBD oil under the tongue, sublingually, it appeared that people could feel the greatest effect.
Placing CBD under your tongue allows it to absorb into the blood stream and get straight to work. The effects usually can be felt in about 30 minutes and should last for 4 to 8 hours depending on the amount you take.
To use CBD oil, all you have to do is hold a few drops under your tongue for a few minutes. You can read more about that here.
CBD oils are usually mixed with a carrier oil the most popular being sunflower, olive and MCT. If you are allergic to a certain type of oil derived from plants, be sure to ask first before you buy to avoid any adverse effects.
To find the correct dosage, you need to take weight into consideration. Taking a minuscule amount will have no effect so be sure to select the correct strength product.
We recommend starting with 5 to 10 mg per dosage for beginners.
If you want to take more in the evening as you find it helps you sleep it’s very easy to take a few extra drops. Our PureSpectrum calculator on each product page tells you exactly how many milligrams are in each drop which helps you take the precise amount you want.
Advantages: Enters your bloodstream quickly, gives you control over how much you take.
Disadvantages: It can be difficult to work out how much to take.
Topical CBD
Effectiveness rating: 3/5
Topical means any product that you use by putting on your skin. You can buy CBD skin care products or make your own by mixing CBD oil with a carrier product such as coconut oil.
There has been lots of research about CBD and skin conditions like acne and psoriasis. You can read our blog post about it here.
The science suggests that CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce skin redness and help heal scarring. You can also buy CBD topical products to help with muscle recovery after exercise.
We sell a Fast Acting Joint and Muscle Pain Gel just for this purpose.
If you use CBD creams or lotions you won’t experience the same effects as when you ingest it because it won’t enter your bloodstream. Also its effect will also be limited to the area where you use it.
Advantages: Great for skin conditions and muscle recovery.
Disadvantages: Only affects the area of your body where it’s applied, doesn’t enter your bloodstream.
Gummies and other edibles
Gummies are a very popular way of taking CBD. Some people don’t like the taste of CBD oil so they prefer to take it in a flavoured gummy. Other edibles include brownies, energy bars, cookies and drinks. Whilst these are great methods for when you’re out and about, you have to be careful about the gummy or edible you take. Some gummies contain lots of sugar and other artificial ingredients which can counteract the benefits of CBD or be unhealthy.
When you eat something that contains CBD, it will go straight to your stomach where it is broken down by the stomach acid. This means that the full amount will not be absorbed into your bloodstream. It will also take a long time to feel its effects.
Advantages: Easy to take on the go, taste nice.
Disadvantages: Edibles can contain lots of sugar, may be broken down in the stomach.
Effectiveness rating: 2/5
CBD Capsules
You can buy CBD capsules that you swallow, just like you would with a medication. This is great news if you want to precisely measure how much you are taking.
Because you swallow CBD capsules, the CBD travels straight. This means that some of the CBD is broken down by the acid in your stomach so it doesn’t enter your bloodstream.
If you want to be flexible with how much you take, perhaps you want to take more in the evening to help you sleep, this is more difficult with capsules compared to oil. However, capsules are great for taking on the go and are mess-free. They’re also good if you don’t normally like the taste of CBD.
Advantages: You know exactly how much you are taking. They are also easy to take.
Disadvantages: May be broken down in the stomach.
Effectiveness rating: 2/5
Other Ways to Take CBD
There are other ways to take CBD which are different to the ones mentioned above. You can buy CBD oil specially designed for vaping or infused coffee. There are also patches, you can smoke it and there is even CBD infused wine. Pretty much anything you can imagine is available infused with CBD. If you’re interested in other ways of taking CBD, you can read our blog about CBD and caffeine. However, when you mix CBD with these other products it can weaken its effectiveness. The technology continues to improve in this area and there are new ways of how to take CBD emerging all the time. Keep an eye out on our website to see some of the new products we’re launching soon.
