Understanding CBD UK oil Terminology and Packaging Labels
by P. Schofield
Understanding the terminology on CBD products can be very confusing and it is something that many CBD companies take advantage of especially when selling weaker concentrations ( 5% or less ). Bottles with weaker concentrations often only state the amount of CBD in mg and not the strength and to make matters more complicated CBD comes in bottle sizes of 10ml, 20ml and 30ml.
CBD oil in the UK is a natural compound extracted from the cannabis plant, the full plant extract has the texture of golden honey and is mixed with what is called a carrier oil in order that it can be accurately measured and ingested. The carrier or mixing oil can be olive oil, sunflower seed oil, MCT oil or Hemp Seed oil.
CBD ( and other cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids ) will interact with the receptors in your endocannabinoid system and has the therapeutic power that you are paying for – the oil that it is mixed with does not. Many CBD oils on the market have such weak concentrations that really all you are buying is a very expensive bottle of cooking oil!
The more oil the cannabis extract is mixed with the weaker the concentration or strength ( just like mixing a quantity of Ribena with water ) and the less effect it will have on your body.
A friend of mine recently purchased a bottle of CBD on line, he was enthusing over what great value it was – a 30ml bottle with 1000mg of CBD, thinking that it was the same strength as a 10ml bottle of CBD with 1000mg but had 3 times the amount of CBD. This is a mistake that a lot of people make.
What he had bought had a third of the strength of the smaller 10ml bottle, it had the same content of CBD but 3 times the amount of oil that it was mixed with, therefore a watered-down solution.
The amount of CBD stated in mg is not the overall strength or concentration of CBD it is the amount of actual CBD in the bottle, so the bigger the bottle the weaker the concentration. The amount of liquid in the bottle is measured in ml, the amount of CBD is measured in mg
So let’s stay with 1000mg and work out a few examples: there are only 3 sizes of bottles so it is not too complicated.
A 10ml bottle with 1000mg of CBD is 10.0 % strength, for every 1ml of liquid in the bottle there is 100mg CBD
A 20ml bottle with 1000mg of CBD is 5.0 % strength, for every 1ml of liquid there is 50 mg CBD
A 30ml bottle with 1000mg of CBD is 3.3 % strength, for every 1ml of liquid, there is 33.3 mg of CBD. It has precisely the same amount of CBD as the 10ml bottle with 3 times the amount of mixing oil.
Next, it is essential to understand what content of CBD is in each drop as this is the method of consumption and dosage
A 10ml bottle contains 200 drops, 20ml – 400 drops and 30ml – 600 drops.
As the concentration of CBD is stronger in the 10ml bottle each drop contains more CBD than the larger bottles.
You divide the amount of mg of CBD in the bottle by the number of drops in the bottle
1000 mg 10ml bottle has 200 drops. 1 drop = 5.0 mg CBD. ( 1000 divided by 200 )
1000 mg 20ml bottle has 400 drops. 1 drop = 2.5 mg CBD ( 1000 divided by 400 )
1000 mg 30ml bottle has 600 drops. 1 drop = 1.7 mg CBD ( 1000 divided by 600 )
|10ml -200 drops||20ml -400 drops||30ml – 600 drops|
|300mg CBD||3.0 %||1.5 %||1.0 %|
|CBD Per drop||1.5 mg||0.75 mg||0.50 mg|
|500mg CBD||5.0 %||2.5 %||1.66 %|
|CBD per drop||2.5 mg||1.2 mg||0.83 mg|
|1000mg CBD||10.0 %||5.0 %||3.3 %|
|CBD per drop||5.0 mg||2.5 mg||1.66 mg|
|1500mg CBD||15.0 %||7.5 %||5.0 %|
|CBD per drop||7.5 mg||3.75 mg||2.5 mg|
|2000mg CBD||20.0 %||10.0 %||6.66 %|
|CBD per drop||10.0 mg||5.0 mg||3.3 mg|
Once you can calculate the amount of CBD you are taking in each drop you can work out accurate dosing according to your body weight and personal needs and requirements.
There is no set dosing calculation as everyone’s body is different, we have different tolerances, different health issues. According to the countless studies that have been conducted a typical guide is between 1- 2 mg of CBD per 10lbs of body weight subject to your need. So if you have a condition or level of pain that you are hoping CBD will help with you may consider 2 mg per 10lbs of your bodyweight.
Body Weight 100lbs (7.14st ) 120lb (8.57 st) 150lb (10.7st). 200lb (14.2st)
CBD per dose. 10-20 mg 12-24 mg 15-30 mg 20-40 mg
Going back to the CBD product my friend bought – 1000mg CBD in a 30 ml bottle, there is 1.7 mg of CBD in each drop, if you wanted to take a dose of 20mg you would need to take 12 drops. It is advisable to ‘start low and go slow’, so better to start on the lower level of 1 mg per 10 lbs of your weight and work up slowly from there until you start feeling a benefit. You cannot overdose on CBD and there are no dangerous side effects. CBD is not inexpensive so it is important to start with a lower dosage and gradually increase to see where your sweet spot is.
