Just to set the record straight, it isn’t. We are here to provide answers according to current medical research in a easy to follow and understandable way.
We can understand that if you’re reading this, you may be in pain right now. Or, perhaps you are someone that is caring for a person who suffers daily. It is this exact disposition that causes me to be so empathetic. You see, nerve pain is something that affects a large portion of our customer base and it while I would absolutely love to have a one on one conversation with anyone who is thinking about trying CBD oil for it; unfortunately that is just not possible.
CBD oil has gained a great reputation for reducing pain which has causing more people than ever to start asking Google about their exact circumstances. Examples of nerve pain that we commonly cover are for fibromyalgia, Sciatica Pain and Carpal Tunnel syndrome and while there are so many others, the real question is, does CBD oil help against neuropathic pain.
Nerve Pain By Definition and Common Symptoms
Nerve pain is also referred to neuropathic pain and is a very common problem with millions of people suffering from it around the world. It is so common in fact, according to sciencedaily.com up to 8% of the UK population reports some type of chronic neuropathic pain; that is 5.3 million people. The data set also notes that this number may be much higher and is only a total of people who report having this type of pain.
Nerve pain is by definition is a chronic pain is cause by damage or dysfunction of the nervous system. Nerve pain can come as a result of an accident or an injury, but other times it could be from a person’s own genetic makeup. The symptoms of nerve pain can be shooting and burning pain sensations in the muscles or body. The symptoms can last for hours or be dormant for a couple days.
It is regretful to say that nerve pain can permanently damage the nerves and perpetuate itself. This phenomenon is called central sensitisation. This is where the nervous system becomes so hypersensitive that the person may feel pain without it even there; think of a hypochondriac. Over time, this cycle can perpetuate itself and cause pain even when the original area has fully healed.
Living With Nerve Pain
If you’re suffering from neuropathic pain, you may be living moment to moment dreading the moment it flares up again. Personally, I’ve been helping a group of women on Facebook with our CBD oil to try and relieve symptoms. They describe their pain levels on a scale of 1 to 10 with many days being exceptionally high and regular days hovering in the 5’s and 6’s. This caused me to understand that pain levels are so high that a 6 grade should be celebrated; not very good.
Living with nerve pain can be debilitating both physically, but also mentally. Going through moments where you may be afraid to upset the current calm in pain signals creates anxiety which can fire up your self defences and cause your pain to get worse. The mental health side of nerve pain is a real topic commonly discussed in groups.
One promising note, CBD oil has been studied for its potential benefits to calm anxiety and mild depression. While these have not been fully verified by science, the evidence is strong enough to support further studies. This only strengthens my CBD oil for nerve pain arguments as we will continue.
How CBD Works and Why It Helps
According to some studies, using CBD oil can help mitigate some symptoms of nerve pain. While more studies are needed to be conclusive, the medical profession is intrigued by the efficacy of it in general.
One study titled: “Cannabinoids suppress inflammatory and neuropathic pain by targeting α3 glycine receptors” (here) found that cannabinoids like CBD can lower sensations of pain. It also says these beneficial effects are not exclusive to interactions with the endocannabinoid system.
Okay, let me break this down. In this particular study, CBD was found to lower feelings of pain in and around the spinal cord. Typically, CBD works with the body’s systems to reduce pain and promote a host of other benefits like sleep and more; all the stuff you’ve been hearing about. But, what’s especially interesting is that these benefits were not exclusive to the ECS system and that pain relief.
Instead, they interacted with something called the glycine receptors or GlyRs which are important centres for pain signaling. GlyRs areThis is excellent news for many reasons!
Multiple Pathways of Nerve Pain Relief
Because using CBD oil has different pathways to mitigate pain one being through the ECS and the other by using GlyRs, that means there may be a compounded relief effect. The study also found that using CBD significantly reduced inflammation and nerve pain without creating a tolerance. This is important information because by using CBD oil, you will not need to increase your dosage gradually over time to get the same effects.
On the mental health side of nerve pain, do you remember that anxiety we spoke about? Using CBD oil daily helps to reduce anxiety levels. There is a study to back this up which I will share with a bit of context.
In the anxiety study people were given CBD oil just before public speaking which is something people fear more than death. The study concludes that 57 adults found that CBD helped lower anxiety levels which is just amazing.

How Fast Does CBD Oil Help Nerve Pain Symptoms?
There are two way to answer this question so I will answer it both ways.
- If you are new to CBD oil and have never used it before, it will take between 3 to 7 days for it to build up in your system. CBD is like a supplement and it will take time to become available in large enough numbers for your body to notice benefits. For some people, it may be after 2 days while others will wait for 7 days.
- If you’ve been using CBD oil for awhile: The effects of CBD oil are noticeable after 30 minutes.
How this compares to other CBD products
We know there are a lot of CBD products out there from gummies to capsules and CBD oils. The best method for using CBD is with the oils and here is why: You absorb more of it, you will save money by using them and you have much more control of what you take.
It all comes down to bioavailability and by using oils under the tongue, you have a chance at absorbing up to 30%. Compare that to just 17% for capsules and gummies. Also, edibles and CBD drinks contain around 15 mg to 25 mg per serving. These are rather large steps considering you may only need 30 mg to feel less pain. Going the edible route, you’d be consuming 40% more than you actually need every time. CBD oils offer a more graduated and precise dosing giving you full control.
Other Uses of CBD oil and Compounding Effects
CBD has a wide range of effects and has so far shown to be helpful for alleviating issues in a natural way. So when you use it for just nerve pain, you will gain a lot of benefits in the fold.
CBD can help with insomnia (sleeping problems), anti-inflammatory properties, and appetite stimulation. It may also aid in the reduction of stress and anxiety, as well as the enhancement of cognitive functions like focus and mental stamina. It is even used to help people overcome sexual performance issues.
The effects will depend on how much you use and how often. We’ve written a guide for dosages in our CBD oil for Pain article. But, in general, you’d want to start with between 30 mg to 70 mg per day split into two dosages.

What are the side effects of using CBD oil for Nerve Pain?
Using CBD oil can produce side effects and interactions with certain medications. We’ve written an article which explains in more detail. In essence, if you are currently using medication, we recommend speaking with your doctor first.
CBD products, regardless of oils or edibles all interact with enzymes in the liver. They compete with your other medication and may amplify the effects of your medicine. Or, in some cases, it could nullify the medication until later. It is vitally important that you understand this before using large amounts of CBD.
